The MECC will be celebrating its 100th day of school this month in many ways. PreK will be bringing and counting 100 different items and Kindergarteners are encouraged to come dressed 100 years old that day!
This past month, we had proper hand washing education sessions taught by Nurse Jill and Career Tech. This month we will be having dental hygiene education sessions and we will all receive a new toothbrush!
Valentine parties will be held on Friday the 12th with our friends and families. Students will be exchanging valentines, playing games, decorating cookies and some will even be having ice cream sundaes!
PreK are beginning penmanship with their “Handwriting Without Tears” workbooks. They are also learning about Arctic Animals and their habitats. We love penguins and polar bears!
Kindergarten will be visited by their 4th grade “Book Buddies”. Other areas of kindergarten study this month will include Presidents, dental hygiene care, groundhogs and weather predictions.
MES
Is there REALLY a mysterious new planet out there? This breaking news comes at the perfect time for second grade. They are right in the middle of a fact finding mission about our Solar System. Once they have all their facts compiled, they will be presenting them through many different apps on our iPad minis. Parents may be amazed by these when they join us for our Valentine parties on the 12th. We would like to give a big shout out to MCDONALDS for giving us an AMAZING deal on Happy Meals for our party! We’re lovin’ it!
Did you know that our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders are becoming authors in the MES Library? We are making Student Treasures Keepsakes books for each class. We will write our books during our library time and illustrate them in art class. Ask your student what his or her story is!
Did you know that 2nd grade is studying the Caldecott Award? It is given to one children’s book illustrator each year! Ask your 2nd grader who won this year!
Did you know that Dr. Seuss would be 112 years old this year? We will celebrate his life and works by participating in READ ACROSS AMERICA on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Wednesday, March 2. We will be wearing PJ’s in 1st-5th grade and SnUgGeLiNg Up To SoMe GoOd BoOkS!
Mannford Elementary art students are hard at work on their Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart poster contest entries! These posters will get our school excited for the upcoming Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart event. The overall winner of the contest will have their design featured on the American Heart Association’s official Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart poster next year.
PE:
3rd grade students have been participating in archery. They are learning the seven basic elements of shooting form, projectiles, trajectories and shooting in opposition.
1st -2nd have been learning different locomotor skills and moving at different speeds, levels and directions, evasive technique and activities that promote cardiovascular endurance. They also participated/learned several different dances.
Upcoming will be the use of the parachute, jump rope and basketball skills and most importantly our community service event for the American Heart Association, Jump rope/Hoops for Heart. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause to help find a cure for the number one cause of death in America.
First Grade will be finishing up the weather unit and beginning a unit on matter. February is Dental health month. The Tooth Lady will visit us 3 times to teach us the importance of taking care of our teeth and how to use proper brushing habits. We are working on place value, math facts, time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour, counting coins, and measurement using weight, length, width, and height. Valentines parties will be at 2:15 on February 12th.
Third graders have been hard at work in math! They are still working their way through the times tables and are finishing up a geometry chapter. They’ve made 3D shapes, used straws to learn about measuring angles, and made kites to discover symmetry. They are looking forward to starting their next project based learning activity about habitats and adaptations. Stay tuned for the details!
The 2nd grade students will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a concert, ‘Dr. Seuss, We Love You’, on March 3rd; more detailed information has been sent home.

MUES
4th Grade made salt dough models of states for Social Studies and is learning about electricity. We are finishing up division and will begin working on geometric shapes. We started Reading Buddies at the ECC. We also have nutrition class each Thursday.
Mrs. Woods’ class finished a novel study on Shiloh and is now reading Sarah, Plain and Tall.
On January 20th 2016, the 4th grade academic team brought home a 1st place trophy for their alpha tournament in Pawnee.
5th grade just finished reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. This is a historical fiction novel that portrays the bravery of the Danish people during WWII. The students learned about the brave people of Denmark that smuggled over 7,000 Jewish people to Sweden during the Nazi invasion.
5th grade social studies students created PatriotBook social media pages for their favorite people from the American Revolution.
MMS
The 7th and 8th grade boys and girls basketball teams will be competing in the Tulsa Seven Conference Tournament next week, Feb. 8-13th.
8th grade Language Arts students are currently reading The Diary of Anne Frank and Mrs. Spradlin’s 3rd hour class will be performing the play on March 3rd and 4th from 10:00AM-11:00AM at the middle school.
MMS 7th grade science students are preparing for the upcoming STEM competition which will be held at Central Tech in Drumright on March 10th. Our students will be competing against students from other districts in areas such as; scientific problem solving, ping-pong ball launchers, mousetrap powered vehicles, and math computation competition.
MMS wrestlers finished the season with an overall record of 8-5, including a 2nd place finish at the Okmulgee Tournament and a 5th place finish at the Bristow Duals. Congratulations wrestlers for a Great season on the mat!!!

Melissa Haling – BASS Fishing Club Sponsor, announces that our Bass Team have thus far placed 4th & 12th overall in previous tournaments. In addition, our team is gaining momentum as they have received sponsorships to help them with some of their expenses. Their next fishing tournament will be on Lake Murray on April 2nd and then on to Lake Texoma on April 3rd. If they can qualify, they will be back on their home Lake (Keystone) for a state event in June.

Zoe Blair, Tessa Hill, Mataya Pawloski and Leigh Welch were invited to sing/perform for our local Mannford Chamber of Commerce dinner on January 18th.
February – April is contest season for Choir. Ms. Lee and our Concert Choir & Cambiata Singers are working hard to prepare two pieces each to perform for a panel of 3 judges in competition format. Contests include the necessity to site read music they have never seen previously and then be judged/evaluated on how well each of them do as site readers. Ms. Lee has brought in guest speakers from the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University to offer fun, rigorous opportunities to be prepared for this robust competition.
Choir students will have opportunities to take a solo to contest, which requires a great deal of individualized work, as well as many rehearsals with Ms. Lee. Thus far, 11 choir students are taking on
this endeavor: Zoe Blair, Caleb Collins, Noah Foster, Tessa Hill, Nic Johnston, Emily King, Britney Mace, Jacob McDaniel, Mataya Pawloski, Homer Smith, and Leigh Welch.
Andrea Frank, MHS Art Teacher, has applied for a grant opportunity from the Oklahoma Arts Council. If approved, MPS could receive monies earmarked for pottery equipment to upgrade our art program. In addition, this grant opportunity will offer our staff and students a way to assist in local equine rescue attempts with our local Mannford Animal Shelter as well.
Andrea Frank, recipient of the previous Betty Bradstreet Grant, announces that monies will be spent on a class set of wood burning tools. Ms. Frank is planning her 1st project soon, using those new instructional tools. In addition, an art display was purchased with grant money as well. That display, will be shared with all district art teachers on our upcoming fine arts nights.
Andrea Frank, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sponsor, announces that a Valentines Pizza Fundraiser is being planned. Donations will be used for one of our MHS students to attend an FCA Summer Camp.
Brian Childers, Ag Teacher/FFA Advisor, is proud to announce that Kevin Remington recently exhibited the Reserve Breed Champion Landrace Swine at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, Co. Kevin made the premium sale, earning a cash prize for his fantastic efforts.
MPS has a Media Productions Club, our sponsor (Kelly Gleason) would like for everyone to know that our student club members are actively seeking cooperative teachers from around our district to talk about what they love about teaching at Mannford Public Schools. Our students video, edit and then link the testimonials to our school website for promotional purposes.

The coaching philosophy currently is to make sure we have our kids competing against the toughest competition in the state, by attending the best tournaments in our area. Thus far, our team members have qualified for 20 events in our upcoming Regional Tournament which will be held at Union HS, March 11-12th.
Leadership Council Sponsor (Donna Lamberson), announces that her annual fundraiser “Data Match Survey” will be underway shortly. Participants are asked to pay a small fee to fill out a data driven survey sheet to see who their perfect match might be. Traditionally, it’s been a fun and interesting way to make money for worthy leadership activities for her leadership students.
Phil Weinland & Tracey Scott (Student Council Sponsors) announce it’s time to gear up for our MPS Pennies for Patients fundraiser February 29-March 4th.
Specifically, our students and faculty will be raising money to donate to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
Money to be used in the research to prevent and assistance of patients, currently fighting those diseases.
Money will be raised as indicated, give your extra pennies (loose change), but also through the use of fundraising to play fun games and activities at school as well.
Mike Banfield’s Varsity Boys Basketball Team is currently 13-6 and 6-1 in Tulsa 7 Conference. In addition, our 9th grade Boys Basketball Team is 10-1 overall and 8-0 in Tulsa 7 Conference play.
Colin Roden’s Varsity Girls Basketball Team is currently 10-9 overall and have won 5 of the last 7 games they have played. Lilly Garner, was a featured “Player to Watch” in the Tulsa Worlds Sports edition after scoring 73 points in one week of varsity play.
Ottawa Cochran’s Varsity Wrestling Team finished 20-7 in Dual Season, District Tournament Runner-ups, Tulsa 7 Conference Runner-ups and ranked 10th in class 4A.
