City Manager Mike Nunneley recently announced that the city has receieved the go ahead from the Corp of Engineers to expand New Mannford by adding 32 new campsites.
These new sites, larger than the existing ones, will make a total of 69 sites with the existing 37. They will be located in the area known as the “softball field, which will now be included within the pipe fence area of the park. Nunneley said there will be a new road made after entering through the guard shack to the south that will lead toward the water and the 32 new sites.
Nunneley explained that the city keeps the money generated from the park in an account to buy equipment and do upgrades. It has been able to let those funds ride and grow over the past few years and now it has enough to install the new sites. He said the cost should be between $40-60,000
He desribed the new sites as having metal awnings over the new concrete picnic tables and grill areas to help ease some of the summer heat due to the lack of trees in the park. Crews will also plant trees as well.
The roads are layed out and flagged with gravel being stockpiled for the road construction. However, the rainy weather has hindered the start time. Nunneley told the Reporter, that he had hoped workers would start on the road by Wednseday of this week. The expansion also involves running new water and electric lines and requires Indian Electric to set three new poles that will be fed by the transformers on the north side of the park.
“We would like to be done by May 1st, realistically though maybe by May 15th,” Nunneley said. He added that weather and other projects in the works are all factors that can affect the completion date. New gravel and other upgrades are currently underway with the existing sites.
